“The four angels have been ready to kill a third of the people”(Rev.9:15): Memory of genocide and anti-imperialism movement

일곱 나팔들의 환상(8:2-11;19)은 주로 사람들에게 두려움과 공포를 자아내는 대재앙을 통한 하느님의 심판과 세계의 종말이라는 점에서 해석되어왔다. 그러나 나는 이 환상의 여러 표징들을 폭력과 학살이 지배하는 로마제국의 한복판에서 새로운 출애굽을 일으킨 하느님의 반제국주의 운동을 위한 해방적 행동들이라는 점에서 해석한다. 여기서 하느님의 심판은 세계의 종말이 아니라, 세계 안에 있는 모든 종류의 불의를 소멸시키고 억압자들을 심판하는 역사 안에서의 심판을 의미한다. 나는 일곱 나팔들의 표징들을 로마제국에 의해서 조직된 세계와 짐승의 추종자들을 심판하고 식민지의 무죄한 인민들에게 대량학살을 자행한 로마제국의 사악한 제국주의 권력의 가면을 벗기는 하느님의 해방적 행동들로 해석한다. 여섯째 나팔과 일곱째 나팔 사이의 현재에 시대에 그리스도인들이 참여하는 반제국주의 운동이 일곱째 나팔 소리의 선포를 위해서 결정적으로 중요하다.

The vision of seven trumpets(8:2-11:19) has been usually interpreted in terms of judgment of God and the end of the world through plagues. But I understand this vision in term of new exodus as God's movement of anti-imperialism taking place in the heart of the Roman Empire, where violence and mass killings are prevailing. Here the judgment of God is aimed not at the end of the world, but at the elimination of unjustice and oppressors in the world. I try to interpret the signs of the seven trumpets as symbols of liberating action of God punishing oppressors and unmasking the evil power of the imperialism of Roman Empire, which brings about the genocides to the innocent people in colonial regions. The Christian participation in the anti-imperialism in the present time between the sixth and seventh trumpet is decisively important for the proclamation of the seventh trumpet.
