이 논문에서 제기한 문제는 두 가지다. 하나는 패설에서 다루어진 소통의 문제가 시대에 따라 어떻게 변모했는가? 다른 하나는 소통의 문제를 다룸으로써 당시 사람들이 말하고자 했던, 혹은 꿈꾸었던 세상은 어떤 모습이었을까? 이 두 가지 문제는 문학이 사회에서 어떤 기능을 할 수 있는가에 대한 근원적인 물음이기도 하다. 첫 번째 물음에 대해 답변하면, 소통의 문제는 조선 후기로 가면서 점점 많아진다고 할 수 있다. 그리고 그 성격도 개인적인 차원에서 점점 사회적인 데로 확장되는 특징을 보인다. 이 문제는 소통의 문제가 개인을 넘어서서 사회 구조의 모순에서 발생하고 있음을 말하는 것이기도 하다. 두 번째 물음에 대해서는 두 형태로 접근했다. 하나는 정치를 통해 함께 사는 세상을 꿈꾸었다는 점이고, 다른 하나는 사람의 가치를 중시하는 세상을 기대했다는 점이다. 더불어 사는 세상, 인간의 존엄성이 강조되는 세상을 조선 후기 패설 문학은 말하고 있었다. 그것은 개인과 사회가 조화롭지 못한 사회에서 문학이 무엇을 해야 하는가에 대한 대답이기도 하다.
There are two issues presented in this paper. The one is how Paeseol treat the problems in communication between the periods of ages. The other one is that the world what the people wanted at the periods by addressing the problem of communication These two issues are the fundamental questions of what the functions of the literature can be in the society. The conclusion about the first question is as follows. The problem in communication is increasingly popular as the latter. Moreover, the character of the problem in communication is been extended more and more social from the personal level. For the second question is approached in two ways. The one is the desire of the political and the living together. The other one is the world that expects the emphasizing the value of the people. Paeseol literature in latter half year of Chosun tells the world living together and the world emphasizing the value of the people. It is the answer what the literature needs to do in discordant society.
