동양문고(東洋文庫)에 소장된 『조선인정풍속(朝鮮人情風俗)』은 조선(朝鮮)의 예제(禮制), 인정(人情), 풍속(風俗) 등을 간략하게 기록해 놓은 책으로 모두 두 책이다. 이 두 책 모두 마에마 쿄사쿠(Maema Kyosaku; 前間恭作, 1868～1942)가 소장하다 동양문고에 기증한 것이다. 두 책은 서로 이본 관계에 있는데, 이본 논의를 위해 조선의 예제, 인정, 풍속을 담은 이본을 B본, 여기에다 붕당(朋黨), 지방편제(地方編制), 군제(軍制) 등의 내용까지 담은 이본을 A본이라 했다. A본은 앞부분에 국한되기는 하지만, 한자어, 한문어구, 한문구절들을 한글로 대체하거나 풀어서 서술하려는 시도를 보였다. 그리고 B본은 예제, 인정, 풍속을 기록한 부분에 표제를 달아서 이해하기 쉽게 했다. 두 이본의 특징을 고려할 때, A본이 B을 변개하는 과정에서 나왔으며, 이 두 이본은 각기 다른 의도를 가지고 간행된 것으로 보인다. 즉 B본은 책의 제목 그대로 조선의 인정, 풍속, 제도, 관습에 대한 서술을 통해 조선의 풍속을 순화하려는 의도가 있었다. 반면, 조선의 붕당, 지방 편제, 군제 등의 내용이 추가된 A본은 당시 일본 제국주의의 확장을 염두에 둔다면 자국민들이 조선에 대한 정보를 익힘과 동시에 조선어도 익히도록 하려는 목적으로 변개된 것이다. 두 이본의 특징과 변개 양상, 저술 의도를 고려할 때, 이 책은 제국주의 세력이 조선으로 확산되던 당시, 일본이 조선에 대한 기본적인 정보를 습득하고 더 나아가서는 조선어를 익히도록 하기 위해 새로 저술을 하거나 기존 서적을 변개하던 정황을 ‘과정’ 자체로써 보여주는 자료라는 점에서 가치가 크다.

『Joseon Customs and Manners (朝鮮人情風俗)』 is a collection of two books housed in Oriental Library (東洋文庫), and this collection of two books briefly records customary systems (禮制), manners (人情) and customs (風俗) in the Joseon Dynasty period. Both the books were owned by Maema Kyosaku (前間恭作, 1868～1942) for a while and were donated to Oriental Library later. These two books are both in a relation of different version, and to clarify how they were edited, this study defined a book describing customary systems, manners and customs in the Joseon Dynasty period as Version B, and the other book even containing details about political factions (朋黨), local administrative organizations (地方編制), military systems (軍制) as Version A. In Version A, the author attempted to describe details in Chinese characters, phrases and sentences into Korean ones or explaining them in Korean, although this attempt was limited on the earlier part of this book. On the other hand, in Version B, titles were added to each record about customary systems, manners and customs for a better understanding. Based on the characteristics of these two different versions, it seemed that Version A was made during the process of altering Version B, and they were published with different intents respectively. Particularly, Version B intended to acclimatize Japanese people to Joseon customs through descriptions about manners, customs, systems and traditions of Joseon, as shown in the title of this book. On the contrary, since details about factions, local administrative organizations and military systems were added to Version A, this book seemed to be modified in order for Japanese people to acquire information about Joseon and learn the Joseon language at the same time, in consideration of the expansion of Japanese imperialism in those days. Based on the characteristics and modification aspects and publication intents of these two different versions, the values of these books are high, in that they clearly show the process of newly writing books or changing the contents of books for Japanese people to acquire information about Joseon and further learn the Joseon language in those days when the Japanese imperialism influence was expanded into Joseon.
