이본은 선본을 확정하기 위한 수단으로만 존재하는 것이 아니라, 이본 그 자체로 독자적인 면모를 지닌다. 그렇기에 이본은 해당 작품군의 향유 범위와 양상을가늠할 수 있는 중요한 표지이다. 지금까지 완판본 <구운몽>은 <구운몽>의 비선본 계열로 분류되어 작품 연구에서 중요하게 다뤄지지 않았으나 선본 계열과 비교해본 결과 나름의 서사적 지향을 확인할 수 있었다. 먼저 인물 형상의 측면에서 완판본은 선본 계열인 서울대본에 비해 남성주인공인 양소유의 효심이 강조되고 영웅적 면모가 부각되는 반면 여성주인공들의 서사적 위상이나 역할은 약화되는 현상을 보였다. 이는 완판본 <구운몽>이 서사적으로 양소유를 보다 더 중요한 인물로 인식하고 양소유 쪽으로 서사의 축을 이동시켰다는 것을 의미한다. 이러한 특징은 <홍길동전>, <장풍운전>, <소대성전>,<용문전>, <조웅전>, <이대봉전> 등 여타 작품의 완판본에서도 공히 포착되는 ‘완판본의 특징’임을 밝혔다. 다음으로 주제 의식을 살피기 위해 환몽구조의 각몽 부분을 살펴본 결과, 완판본의 각몽 부분에서 불교적 색채가 대부분 제거되고, 성진이 불교적 수행의 주체가 아니라 그저 가르침을 받는 존재로만 형상화 된 것이 확인되었다. 주제도 空사상이 아닌 인생무상․일장춘몽이었다. 즉. 특정한 이념이나 종교에 귀속되지않으면서도 세속적 욕망에 대한 경계를 제대로 드러낼 수 있는 결말을 고민하는과정에서 이와 같은 내용이 구성된 것이다. 이러한 사실을 통해 완판본 <구운몽>은 향유층의 이해와 요구를 반영하여 선본 계열과 다른 미감을 구현한 독자적 면모가 있음이 확인되었다.

The copy of a different edition not only exists for the means thatdetermines the best version, but also exists for the purpose itself. Andfurthermore it will be the important sign that estimates the territory andaspect of the group of one literary work. Until now the edition wanpanbon<Ku-un-mong> couldn't get a good write-up in the researches of differenteditions about <Ku-un-mong> because it wasn't evaluated as best version. But it takes it's own line. First, in terms of characters, it emphasizes his devotion to his parents andheroic appearance of the male character Yang-so-you, whereas weakens thestatus and role of the female characters. These facts attest that editionwanpanbon <Ku-un-mong> moved the axis of narration to Yang-so-you. Suchorientations appear other wanpanbon classical novel, <Hong-gil-dong-Jeon>,<Jang-pung-un-jeon>, <So-dae-seong-jeon>, <Yong-moon-jeon>, <Jo-ung-jeon>,<Yi-dae-bong-jeon>, and so on. Second, in terms of subjects, it disappears the tone of Buddhism, soSeong-jin is portrayed as a person who is not a man of religion but justrequests the enlightenment. And ultimate message does not connect to theidea of Gong[空] in the Diamon stura but the frailty of human life. Namelyedition wanpanbon <Ku-un-mong> did not want to belong to particularreligion or ideology, and it wanted to tell the truth of human life. Throughthe foregoing statement, we can make an affirmation that the different editions have their own narrative and identity.
