In this study, I try to propose a new method for measuring the degree of combination of morphological and syntactic combining forms, and to apply it to analyze Korean tonal dialects. The main idea of the method which is elaborated in this study is based on the fact that the rhythmic unit of a utterance corresponds to a ‘tonal phrase' in Korean tonal dialects well. Therefore, through analyzing the tonal phrase of the combining form, we can demonstrate the manner in which the combining form consists of rhythmic units, concomitantly obtain accurate information as to the degree of combination of the combining form. I hope that this method will contribute to understanding the true nature of morphological and syntactic combining forms in Korean.
