The purpose of this study is to research the capability of complement of result(CR) as a mechanism of the middle sentence in modern Chinese. It doesn't seem to be proper to argue "middle voice" in Chinese because it is a formal category and Chinese is said to have no variation in the form. But there is another definition that it is a action or state which affects the subject of the verb semantically. This paper will discuss "Chinese middle", based on the latter view. Modern Chinese has some phenomena like the "logical passive sentence", "un-willed sentence", and "bodily activity sentence", which can be included in the middle sentence together. So, we can give a common term to them for clearer understanding about Chinese. This paper will focus on the research about CR instead of comparing the above-mentioned three phenomena with the middle sentence. CR has some distinguishing features as a mechanism of the Chinese middle. Patient-subject often occurs with its complement in modern Chinese and so does CR. However, CR is compounded with a verb very closely unlike any other complements and the form of "verb+ CR" is often regarded as a single word. Therefore, we can say that CR is a part of a word and it is a mechanism of the Chinese middle. This paper will study the capability of CR as a mechanism of the Chinese middle through the following two aspects: one is the feature of CR as a part of a word and the other is the co-occurrence of patient-subject and CR.
