이상에서 우리는 현대국어의 선어말어미 ‘-더-’의 형태·통사적 지위와 그 의미 기능에 대해 논의하였는데, 이를 요약 정리하면 다음과 같다. 우리는 먼저 ‘-더-’의 형태·통사적 지위에 대해 논의하였다. 기존 연구에서는 관형절에서 쓰이는 ‘-던’의 ‘-더-’와, 종결형의 ‘-더-’의 동질성을 주장하는 연구와 이질성을 주장하는 연구가 양립해 있었다. 종결형의 ‘-더-’에서 보이던 주어인칭 제약 현상이 관형절에서는 해소되는 것으로 설명하던 기존 연구에서는 제약이 해소되는 원인을 규명하지 못하고 있었다. 이런 기존 연구와는 달리, 본 연구에서는 ‘-더-’에는 원래부터 주어인칭 제약이 없으며, 이 ‘-더-’가 종결형에서 ‘-더라, -더냐’와 같이 쓰일 때 주어인칭에 제약이 생기는 것으로 설명하였다. 아울러 관형절에서 쓰이는 ‘-던’의 ‘-더-’와, 종결형의 ‘-더-’가 하나의 형태소임을 논의를 통해 밝혔다. 다음으로 우리는 ‘-더-’의 의미 기능에 대해 논의하였다. 기존 연구에서는 ‘-더-’의 기본 의미로 ‘회상’이나 ‘과거’, ‘보고’, ‘단절’, ‘기준시점의 이동’ 등을 다양하게 제시했는데, 종결형과 관형절의 ‘-더-’를 포괄할 수 있는 의미로는 ‘기준 시점의 이동’으로 보는 것이 가장 합리적이라고 보았다. 아울러 ‘-더-’ 앞에 오는 ‘-었-’의 의미에 대해서도 논의하였는데, 이 경우의 ‘-었-’은 과거시제를 나타내지 않고 주로 ‘완료의 지속’을 의미한다는 점도 밝혔다.

The purposes of this study are to examine the relationship between '-deo-' and '-deon', and to clarify the meaning of the prefinal '-deo-' in Modern Korean. There was a disagreement among scholars on the relationship between '-deo-' in the relative sentence and '-deo-' in the declarative sentence. Some scholars regarded that '-deon' was different from '-deo-' in 'subject constraint', the constraint on the shift of the speaker's viewpoint. But in this paper, we argue that '-deon' can be analyzed into '-deo-' and '-eun'. Moreover we argue that '-deo-' in the relative sentence is identical to '-deo-' in the declarative sentence. Some scholars insisted that '-deo-' meant 'the past tense', 'completion', 'experience' or 'announcement'. But we come to the conclusion that the basic meaning of '-deo-' is the shift of the speaker's viewpoint. Furthermore we can find that '-eoss-' preceded '-deo-', does not mean 'past tense' but 'the duration of completion'.
