세종과 정인지를 비롯한 훈민정음 해례본 저자들은 2년이 넘는 공동 연구 끝에 대단히 치밀하고 섬세한 새 문자 해설서를 펴냈다. 그 당시 조선과 조선말을 가리키는 용어들에는 그들 나름대로의 언어관을 담아냈다. 따라서 문맥이나 맥락에 따른 섬세한 쓰임새를 고려하여 현대말로 옮겨야 한다. 더욱이 서로 다른 어휘나 용어라면 다르게 쓰인 맥락을 가능한 한 정확히 반영하여 현대말로 옮겨야 한다. 이는 제대로 된 번역은 직역과 의역의 가치를 동시에 구현하려는 노력에 의해 이루어진다는 관점에 따른 것이다. 학문적 차원에서는 다양한 번역이 많을수록 좋고 정책과 교육 차원에서는 표준 공역이 필요하다는 전제 아래 훈민정음 문자와 책의 문화적 가치를 한층 더 높이기 위해 표준 공역이 절실한 시기가 되었다. [표14]에서 제시한 구체적인 어휘 대안 번역에서 중요한 점만을 종합 정리해 보면 다음과 같다. (1) ‘國之語音’과 ‘國語’는 그 당시 시대적 맥락과 현대 맥락을 함께 고려하여 “우리나 라 말소리”, “우리나라 말”로 옮기는 것이 적절하다. (2) ‘東方’은 ‘동방’으로 ‘大東’은 ‘동방겨레’로 옮기는 것이 적절하다. (3) ‘諺語’는 ‘토박이말’로 옮기는 것이 적절하다. (4) ‘諺’은 ‘文’과 대립된 글말 차원의 쓰임새에서는 ‘언문’으로, 입말 차원에서 중국말과 대비시키는 맥락에서는 ‘우리나라 말’, 일반 백성의 말로 쓰일 때는 ‘토박이말’로 옮기는 것이 적절하다. 단 중국말과 대비시키면서 토박이말을 가리킬 때는 ‘우리 토박이말’로 옮긴다. (5) ‘方言俚語’는 “우리나라 세속말”로 옮겨야 한다.

This report indicates the idea of the standard translation about ‘Korea and the language’ through the various ways of translation based on ‘Hunminjeongeum Haeryebon’. The standard translation is needed for the education and the policy, though the various ways of translation could be needed for the other researches. This report shows some cases of the translation about the words below : (1) ‘國之語音(Gukjieoeum)’ and ‘國語(Gugeo)’ is supposed to be translated into “Korean spoken language” or “Korean language” on the basis of Joseon Dynasty. (2) ‘東方(Dongbang)’ is supposed to be translated into Dongbang(동방) itself.. ‘大東(Daedong)’ into “Dongbang-gyeore”. (3) ‘諺語(Eoneo)’ must be translated into “the original Korean word” (4) We translate ‘諺’ as ‘Eonmun(언문)’ in contrast with ‘mun(文)’ of Chinese Character. If not such situation, in the context on contrast with Chinese word, we translate ‘諺’ as ‘the Korean language’ and ‘the Korean language used by the people’. In special case of the contrast with Chinese , we translate ‘諺‘ with “the original Korean word”. (5) ‘方言俚語(Bangeonieo)’ must be translated into “our mundane word”. These translations is in according to the view that we must reflected concurrently the literal translation and the free translation for the proper translation.
