The purpose of this study is to analyse the materials in translation of the Chinese classics and to set up a degree of free translation rank. So, for the purpose, this study presented a new view point of translating and a concept of free translating, investigated the type of texts which translated the Chinese classics, and analyzed the position of Ipgyeoch text which has a textual function. The main result of this study is as follows: First, the translation must be comprehended as ‘transference’ from Chinese classical text to Korean text. There is an ideal free translation text in the last point of transference. So there are so many translated texts on this transference and all texts have a relative relation. And all texts have a directivity of free translation. Second, materials in translation of Chinese classics are classified into Ipgyeoch text, Idu text, and Eonhae text, and also into Hanmun vs. Eonhaemun, Hanmun vs. Ipgyeoch, Hanmun vs. Idumun, Hanmun vs. Idumun vs. Eonhaemun etc. by its form. The Ipgyeoch text must be regarded as translation and translation text. It has the function as a text with Hanmun as a original text. Third, in the point of view of Korean linguistic features, the degree of free translation order could be established; [Hanmun] < Eumdok Ipgyeochmun < Idumun < Seokdok Ipgyeochmun < Eonhaemun < [Ideal free translation text]. And the step of Eonhaemun has many texts which have a different quality of translation. In this category, a more minute criterion which is established by Korean linguistic features. This order will be useful when judging the degree of a free translation.
