For the past half century, how to distinguish between single and complex sentences of the Chinese language has always been the center of the debates among the academics of Chinese linguistics. The focus of the debates is around the necessity of distinguishing between single and complex sentences, and the standards used to differentiate them, etc. Based on the existing research achievements from all, in terms of the debates themselves, the background of the debates, and the newly-emerged arguments, this article provides an in-depth examination and analysis. Furthermore, this article raises the author's own perspective on the standards of how to distinguish between single and complex sentences. The author demonstrates and explains how to apply these rules against some of the most controversial sentence examples in the grammarian arena. Not only does the article provide practical information in Chinese language teaching, aid better understanding of the structure of Chinese sentences, it also adds great value to the academic topic of how to distinguish between single and complex sentences
