This study aims to explicate how English speakers construe the spatial location of one object with respect to another object which has the properties such as its orientation and animacy. Furthermore, this study will find out which factors are in charge of choosing the construal operations. To do this, the experiment was conducted with the theories of the alignment of Figure–Ground (Talmy 2000a) and the Frame of Reference (Levinson 2003). The participants of English native speakers are asked to complete sentences which describe the locations between objects in the pictures of 3 cases according to the ontological and geometrical properties of the objects. Based on the experiment, the construal operations on the relative location of two objects by English speakers are discussed.
