The purpose of this study is to examine the role of syllable(e.g. 학 in 학교) and antibody(e.g. 하 in 학교) in Korean visual word recognition. While Syllable and antibody have been regarded as important units in lexical access, there is no consensus on which sublexical unit is more critical in korean visual word recognition. In Experiment 1 and 2, the participants performed masked priming lexical decision tasks. The results of the both experiments showed that the orthographically identical first- syllable priming facilitated lexical decision of the target words while both the antibody priming and phonologically identical first-syllable priming did not. These results support the modified DRC model(Bae & Lee, 2010), which assumes orthographic syllable as the major processing unit in Korean visual word recognition.
