This paper analyzes how the Korean morpheme -ess is translated in the English version of the novel Please Look After Mom. Based on the analysis, it suggests that -ess is a perfect under de Swart’s (2007) analysis in which the perfect has the meaning of ‘orientation toward the speech time.’ The paper further shows that the choice of the translation equivalent of -ess in the English translation is influenced by two factors: (i) whether the tense form can function as narrative tense and (ii) whether the tense contains the meaning of ‘orientation toward the present moment’.
