A lot of medical students study for medical school entrance examination. However during Ming period, some also took the imperial civil examination. It was easy for them to pass the first xiangshi exam because they held special prerogatives. They could take the first exam in the capital because they were listed on a professional registry of medical doctors. Usually examinees had to take the test in their own home district. The system for studying at medical school was difficult and it was hard to pass the final exam to become a medical officer in the Ming period. So students fulfilled their dreams of leaving the medical world and pursuing a career in civil government.
