So far the structure of Heart of Darkness has been discussed in terms of that of epic. But this paper aims to apply Frye's theory of romance to the analysis of the structure of Heart of Darkness, showing how much Heart of Darkness recapitulates the plot of the romance-narrative. The structure of this novel is a parody of romance: the mythical pattern of innocence is transformed into a realistic pattern of experience. For unlike the quest romance which is the victory of fertility over the waste land, this novel reaches the point of demonic epiphany. Marlow's adventure is not a grand quest for the Grail or an enchanted princess, but his journey is a parody of a quest for the Grail. Marlow returns not to the idyllic world, but to the whited sepulchral city. His return does not suggest a marriage, but confirms the illusion of love. In Heart of Darkness Conrad is critical of the world which fails to live up to romance through his ironic description of Marlow's symbolic adventure of the romantic quest.
