This study aimed (1) to develop a model of teaching English through retelling story and (2) to identify characteristics of utterances. The developed model consisted of reading processes assessment which was developed by Swearingen & Allen(2000). Their procedures are word recognition, retelling and recalling. The results of the study are as follows: Firstly, the application of the model to two children reveals that their inner speeches are characterized as predicative and syntactically contracted. The in-depth analysis of their utterances also shows that their inner speeches are related to the structures of their mother tongue. It is found that the individualities of the children and their learning styles have an influence on their English learning. Secondly, it was found that English was used as tools for thought.
