Aldo Leopold has been regarded as a forerunner of a new environmental thinking and ethics and as the most important source of modern biocentric and holistic ethics. The new environmental ethics which Leopold calls ecological consciousness and a land ethic relate with scientific, aesthetic, and deep ecological understanding of the natures of nature and emphasize human respect and ethical obligation for nature. He advances ecological consciousness and the land ethic and tries to dismantle the view of nature hardened in anthropocentric tradition and to change at the root level our homocentric chauvinism. Leopold thinks that the formation of the consciousness involves human effort, insight, and ability to scrutinize scientifically and esthetically each element of nature and then to synthesize the elements into a whole scheme and elicit ethical meanings from it, as Leopold himself displays in imaging land as a biotic community and forming the land ethic. The reason why Leopold names ecological consciousness the land ethic is due to his finding that the ethic has its origin in the tendency of interdependent individuals or groups to evolve modes of co-operation. Leopold harmoniously combines conflicting aspects of the limitation and fulfillment of individual freedom in the name of co-operative ethics.
