The purpose of this paper is to examine the viability of employing the intonation cloning technique in teaching English prosody. Ten native speakers of Korean participated in the prosody self-study experiment. All of them were similar in their level of English proficiency. They were grouped into two groups: the target group and the control group. For the study material of the target group, the English native speaker's F0 contours were transferred to matching utterances of the target group. No manipulation was done to the study material for the control group. The recordings both before and after the experiment showed that the target group performed better than the control group. Specifically, the target group displayed patterns similar to those of the English native speaker in terms of the location of the highest F0 points and the range of F0 values between the lowest and the highest points in the utterances. The recording after the experiment was also subjectively evaluated by a native speaker of English. As expected, the target group scored higher than the control group. All these results suggest that it is viable to teach English intonation by using learner’s utterances with cloned native intonation.
