John Keats's odes written during the last years of his life are called "Great Odes." His odes, however, have been praised mainly for its literary and linguistic merits not so much for their themes and messages. In this study, I tried to analyze his odes not only as great works of literary perfection but also as manifestations of "powerful and active thought," as G. M. Hopkins maintained. This study traces his odes as results of his effort to make his soul and to attain Zen Buddhistic spiritual awakening, and, in doing so, it compares Keats's odes to Hanshantzu's Hanshan Poems, which are the representative poetry of Zen Buddhism.
