Decolonizing the language was one of the main concerns of the newly liberated countries in the postcolonial age. To establish their new identities, they even developed new englishes, which were altered from the standard English to suit local surroundings. However, globalization, which directly followed the decolonization movement, made the decolonizing process in peril. English, once the language of the imperial rule, became the language of the global communication. In the age of globalization ELT needs to focus once more on the local concerns. Critical ELT pedagogies, which argue that the new ELT paradigm must combine global outlook with local conditions, would help students develop cross-cultural awareness. It is about time that ELT in South Korea must take these new pedagogical approaches into account and develop 'glocalized' pedagogies, which bring a socioculturally situated perspective to the current ELT pedagogies.
