Under the rubric of cultural studies, recent Poe scholarship is attempting to examine Poe in the context of the nineteenth-century American society and history. Indeed, during the past two decades, Poe criticism has gradually moved away from an exclusive focus on the close reading of his text in order to explore his broad cultural spectrum and resonance in the antebellum America. Traditional critics tend to overemphasize Poe's marginality, ignoring his active participations as a commercial writer in the antebellum literary scene. In the first half of nineteenth century, the American literary marketplace was formed by a constant, dynamic interplay between imaginative writing and journalistic culture. During the 1840s, Poe deliberately incorporated journalistic aspects into his literary work in order to appeal to the mass readers who were accustomed to newspaper reading. In this study, I will explore the intimate relationship between contemporary news and Poe's fictional construction which has rarely been investigated in academic discussion.
