이 논문은 이양호 교수의 교회사 연구 방법론의 특징과 그의 공헌을 그의 초대교회사 연구를 통하여 살펴본 논문이다. 이양호 교수는 칼빈에 관한 세계적인 학자로서 칼빈의 신학구조를 기존의 전통적인 학설과 다르게 동심원적으로 파악한다. 칼빈의 신학 전반에 동심원적 구조가 나타난다는 것이 이양호 교수의 주장인데 동심원적 구조란 중요한 것과 주변적인 것을 구별하는 것을 말한다. 그런데 칼빈의 신학구조로 표현되는 이 동심원적 구조가 이양호 교수의 초대교회사 연구에도 그대로 나타나는 것을 볼 수 있다. 그는 초대교회사의 중심을 어거스틴으로 보고 어거스틴에서 다른 인물들 즉 주변으로 연구를 확대하는 것을 볼 수 있다. 반면 논문의 내용적인 면에서는 주변에 대한 서술로 시작해서 중심으로 가는 선택과 집중의 서술 방식을 취한다. 이런 방식은 특히 그의 통사적인 연구에서 두드러진다. 이양호 교수의 교회사 연구 방법론은 몇 가지 특징을 가진다. 하나는 칼빈의 신학구조와 같이 신학의 전모를 파악하여 이를 간단한 도식이나 도형화하여 이해하기 쉽도록 만드는 것이고 또 하나는 그의 논문 기술 방식이다. 그는 논문에서 뚜렷한 문제제기를 통해 독자의 관심을 불러일으키고 이 주제에 대한 학자들의 대립적인 견해를 제시함으로 독자들의 이해를 돕고 다시 여러 증거와 전거를 통해 자신의 견해를 제시하는 방식으로 논문을 전개한다. 이양호 교수는 저명한 학자로서, 교회사학회(Society of Church History)와 칼빈학회를 비롯 우리나라 유수의 여러 학회를 이끌어 나간 지도자로서 그리고 대학의 유능한 행정가로서, 무엇보다 학문을 게토(ghetto)로 만들지 않고 학문이란 중심에서 실천이란 주변으로 지식을 확산시킨 운동가이자 지행일치를 실천한 인물이다.
This essay examined the characteristics and his contribution of the methodology of Church History of Professor Lee Yang Ho through his interpretation of Early Church History. As a world’s leading scholar on Calvin, Professor Lee Yang Ho grasps Calvin’s theological structure as concentric circle that is different from traditional theory. Professor Lee Yang Ho argues that the structure of concentric circle is displayed over the whole theology of Calvin which differentiates important things from those of peripheral. He regards Augustine as the center of Early Church History and expands his studies to other persons, the peripheral. On the other hand, he describes from the peripheral to the center in the contents which is a narrative method of selection and concentration. This method is particularly noticeable in his macro research. Methodology of Professor Lee Yang Ho has some of the features. First, it is to grasp the whole aspects of theology such as the theological structure of Calvin, and to make them easy to understand with simple schematic and figures. The second is his way of describing his thesis. He evokes the curiosity of the reader by raising problems obviously in the paper and by presenting confrontational views of the scholaros on the topic, and expand the papers through various evidence and examples. Professor Lee Yang Ho is as a prominent scholar, as the leaders to lead some of the scholarly societies such as the Society of Church History, and the Calvin Society, the competent administrator in the university, and a person who is an activist as well as a person who is consistent with knowledge and practice that has expanded the knowledge at the center to the practice at the peripheral, not leaving the knowledge in the ghetto.
