로스앤젤레스 한인타운은 최근 미국의 다문화주의와 한국의 초국적주의의 상호작용의 영향을 받아 세분화된 집단정체성이 꽃을 피우면서 새로운 변화를 경험하고 있다. 이 연구는 정체성을 고정되어 있는 것이 아닌 일종의 과정이라 간주하여, 한인타운 한인이주자들의 혼성적 정체성에 초점을 맞추어 그것들이 어떻게 생산, 경합, 협상되는지 살펴보고 있다. 그러한 사회적 분절화와 분절된 정체성은 부유한 초국적 투자자들, 소규모 사업체 소유주들, 1.5/2세대의 한국계 미국인들, 하위 이주 노동자들을 통해서 확인된다. 그러한 정체성의 분절화는 또한 라티노와 무슬림 노동자들 같은 한인타운의 비한인 노동자에게서도 관찰된다. 혼성적 정체성이 초국적주의 이념을 실천하는 위로부터의 이주자들에게만 나타나는 배타적 현상이 아니라는 점을 염두에 두고, 이 연구에서는 상이한 혼성적 정체성들이 다양한 계층의 집단에서 생산되고 있음에 주목하고 있다. 특히 서류미비 노동자와 같은 하위 계층에 초점을 맞추어 그들이 자신들의 담화적 정체성을 어떻게 담론적으로 구성해 내는가를 주의깊게 살펴보았다. 주요어 : 한인타운, 재영토화, 다문화주의, 초국적주의, 서류미비 노동자, 혼성적 정체성
The recent proliferation of collective identities in Koreatown has been affected by the interplay of American multiculturalism and Korean transnationalism. In this paper, considering identity not as a fixed position but a process itself, I interrogate the term hybrid identity and explores how different hybrid identities are produced, contested, and negotiated. Such social fragmentation and fragmented identities include various groups such as wealthy transnational investors, small-business owners mainly composed of first generation Korean Americans, 1.5 and 2nd generations of Korean Americans, migrant workers, and so on. Also such identity fragmentation is expanding to embrace increasing non-Korean blood laborers in Koreatown such as Latinos and various kinds of Muslim ethnic groups. Suggesting hybrid identity is not a exclusive possession of transnational migrants, I investigate how different hybrid identities are produced among these groups.
