칠천량해전은 1597년(선조 30년)음력 7월 16일 거제 칠천도 부근에서 조선수군과 일본 수군 간에 벌어진 치열한 전투이다.임진왜란 기간 동안 조선 수군의 유일한 패전이라 할 수 있는 이 한 번의 패배로 조선 수군은 궤멸하기에이른다.이 글은 칠천량해전의 패인을 전쟁의 원칙 적용 측면에서 분석하여 교훈을 도출하는데 그 목적이 있다. 전쟁의 원칙은 2012년부터 한국군이 사용하고 있는 목표,공세,집중,기동, 지휘통일,기습,사기,정보,방호의 원칙 등 9가지를 적용하였다.연구 결과,정유재란은 예고된 전쟁이었음에도 불구하고,철저한 준비를 한 일본과 달리 선조와 조선 조정의 전쟁준비 부실,수군 지휘체계에 대한 문제점과 원균의 통솔력 부족 등이 패전의 주요 원인으로 작용하였다. 특히,전쟁의 원칙 적용 측면에서 칠천량해전은 상하간 의사소통의 결여로인한 전략의 부재와 명확한 목표의 미설정,적에 대한 정보수집 노력의 부족, 주간이동으로 인한 공격기도 노출과 격군 감소로 인한 함대의 기동력 저하,경계소홀로 인한 적의 기습 허용,군기 및 사기의 저하 등 총체적인 결함에 의해발생된 것으로 확인되었다. 칠천량해전은 최근 동북아 안보상황이 임진왜란 직전의 상황과 무엇이 다른것인가를 생각해 보게 하고,유비무환의 대비태세를 갖추어야 함을 교훈으로제시하고 있다. 주제어 :원균, 이순신, 임진왜란, 정유재란, 칠천량해전, 전쟁의 원칙
Chilcheonryang-Engagement was a fierce battle between the Chosun and the Japanese naval forces that took place near the Chilcheonryang island on July 16th,1597(the 30th year of King Seonjo's reign) by lunar calendar. It was the only battle that the Chosun navy was defeated. It even put to rout the battle during the Imjin War.This paper aims at analyzing the cause of defeat in the aspect of principles of war and drawing a lesson from it. The lack of communication between the commander and the subordinate and inappropriate application of the principles of war caused the defeat in Chilcheonryang-Engagement. There were no strategies and any efforts to gather information about the war, neglecting the guard's information about the enemy and its movements.The communication failures,day-time mobilization and attacks,and negligence of surveillance led to the defeat and relaxation of military discipline even caused demoralization of the soldiers.
