조선후기 서연관 제도는 산림들이 초빙되면서 홍문관이 겸직하던 조선전기와는 다른 모습으로 바뀌어갔다. 조선전기에는 시강원 중심으로 서연은 운영되었다. 그러나 후기에는 산림이 경연관으로 초빙되면서 서연관을 겸하게 되니 산림을 초빙하기 위해서 만든 찬선·진선·자의 중심으로 운영되었다. 그래서 시강원에 속한 보덕·필선 등의 서연관은 지위가 상대적으로 격하되면서 대간이나 다른 관직들이 겸직하게 되었다. 그러나 숙종대 이후 환국이 일어나고 영조대 탕평정치가 행해지면서 산림의 지위가 상대적으로 격하되니 산림으로 초빙되는 경영관이 서연관을 겸하게 되고, 급기야는 시강원 서연관을 초선하는 제도가 생기면서 보덕 등 시강원 관직을 산림들이 담당하게 되게 되었다. 이에 찬선이 정3품 당상관이 되어 이끌던 시강원은 보덕·겸보덕이 정3품 당상관이 되어 이끄는 시강원으로 바뀌어 갔다. 이는 조선후기 산림이 붕당정치기에 임금과 세자의 스승으로 초빙되어 세도를 담당하는 재상이 되었다가, 탕평정치기에는 세자의 교육을 담당하는 서연관으로 역할을 하며 경연관을 겸하는 위치로 바뀌는 것을 반영하는 변화였다.
In later Chosun period, the Kyoungyeonguan(經筵官) system, which is a concurrent position of Hong Mun Guan, had changed into diffrent character by San Rim had just started to get invited from government at that time. In the early age of Chosun, Siganwon had been the main processer of Kyongyeon(經筵) to operate it. However, Sanrim were invited for Kyongyeonguan and took the position of Seoyeonguan also in the later peroid of Chosun. So it had changed to be operated by Chansun· Jinsun·Jaui; These were invitation tools for Sarim. Therefore, The Seoyeonguan's prestige such as Bodock and Pilsun was getting lower. For this reason, Daegan and other agents took this place. Nevertheless, After King Sukjong, there were rapid events of change in Chosun dynasty and King Youngjo started Tang- pyoung system which made the prestige of Sanrim gets lower. These events made Kyoungyeonguan to took the position of Seoyeonguan at the same time. Eventually, the system of nominate for Si Gang Won and Seoyeonguan had developed. San Rim take the charge of Si Gang Won position such as Bodock. Accordingly, Sigangwon which was led by Chansun, the level of Jeong Sampoom as Dangsanguan, had taken over by Bodock·Gyupbodock as the same positioning level. This fact tells that San Rim were being the prime minister, undetaking the political power, in the later term of Chosun dynatsty period under the situation of Boong-Dang politics; by being a master of King and the crown prince. Moreover in the period of Tang-Pyoung politics, Sarim were being Seoyeonguan which took the concurrent position as Kyoung Yeon Guan to educate the crown prince.
