우재 이후원의 가계와 사우관계는 산당 세력과 인척이나 학맥으로 밀접한 연관이 있음을 밝혔다. 우재의 정치활동과 그 세력은 광해군대 옥사에 화를 당하는 세력이 되었고, 이에 광해군을 몰아내고 인조반정을 하는 주도세력이 되었다. 이는 폐모론을 주도했던 인성군을 추대하는 유효립 모반사건을 진압하는 주역이 되기도 하였다. 뒤늦게 과거급제하여 벼슬길에 올랐던 우재는 병자호란을 당하여서는 승지 대사간 호조판서 감사 등 요직을 맡으면서 전란 후의 상처와 혼란을 수습하는데 진력을 다하게 된다. 효종이 즉위하여서는 유계 조석윤 등을 옹호하고 김자점 등을 처단하는데 주도를 하였다. 이후에는 안흥진을 건설하는 역할을 맡으며 북벌 준비에 진력을 다하게 된다. 그리고 이를 같이 추진할 우암 송시열 동춘당 송준길 등 산당 세력을 규합하여 대동법 양반 호포론 등 개혁을 추진해간다. 현종이 즉위하여서는 예송에서 기년설을 지지하며 우암과 함께 정계를 주도해가다 현종 2년에 우의정으로 졸한다. 이처럼 우재 이후원은 서인 산당의 주도세력으로 인조 효종대를 주도해가던 정치가 사상가였다.
