선어말 어미 [-시-]에 대한 기존의 학설이나 견해는 다양하고 다채로우나 본고에서는 그 중 학계에 큰 영향을 끼친 것으로 판단되는 학설이나 견해를 구체적으로 살펴보고 면밀히 검토하여 [-시-]의 기능에 대하여 규명하고자 하였다. 본고에서는 현대 선어말 어미 [-시-]의 대우법은 언어 형태에 의한‘의례적 대우법’과 {발화-상황},{담화-상황}과 화자의 유표적인 의도에 의한‘표현적 대우법’으로 나눈다. 그리고 [-시-]가 경험주와 관련된다는 논의는 [-시-]의 쓰임 분포를 기초로 [-시-]가 주격 대상 인물만 관련되는 것은‘본래적 쓰임’(의례적 용법)이라고 보고, 그 외에 주제 대상 인물, 속격의 대상 인물, 여격 대상 인물 등등과 관련되는 것은‘파생적 쓰임’(표현적 용법)으로 나눌 수 있다고 본다.[-시-]의 기능을 이해하는 데서‘언어외적’,‘언어내적’기준을 모두 고려하여야 한다. 문장 표면에는 나타나지 않지만 발화상황에서 화자가 심리적으로 높이고자 하는 대상만 분명하면 서술어 구성에 [-시-]가 쓰일 수 있다. 그러한 용법을 잘못되었거나 예외적인 것으로 몰아가면 [-시-]에 대한 정확한 이해가 불가능하다. 대우법은 실제 세계의 언어적 반영이며, 대우법 사용에서 가장 중요한 것은 언어 형식이 아니라 사람임을 강조한다.
Existing theories or opinions on prefinal ending [-시-] are various and colorful, but those that are judged to have much influence on academia is specifically looked into and closely reviewed to investigate function of [-시-]. In this study, antithesis of modern prefinal ending [-시-] is divided into 'formal antithesis' by language form, {articulation-situation}, {discourse-situation}, and 'expressive antithesis' by vernier intention. Also, discussion that [-시-] has relation with experience ending is seen as 'original usage' (formal usage) that [-시-] is only related to nominative figures based on usage distribution of [-시-]. Relation with other topic subject figures, genitive subject figures, and dative subject figures can be divided into 'derivative usage' (expressive usage). 'Inner language,' 'outer language' standard should all be considered by understanding function of [-시-]. Although not shown in sentence surface, [-시-] can be used in predicate composition if the speaker in articulation situation has clear object to be mentally risen in which accurate understanding on [-시-] is impossible when this usage is wrongly used or exceptionally driven. Antithesis is linguistic reflection of the actual world and it is emphasized that people are most important in usage of antithesis, not language form.
