도서(섬) 연구는 역사학보다 인문지리학 또는 자연지리학 분야에서 많이 이루어졌다. 또한 연구 자료를 통합적으로 확보하기보다는 개별 연구자가 확보한 문헌자료에 주로 의지해 왔다. 그러나 개별 연구자가 확보한 문헌 자료만으로는 더 이상 연구 성과의 진전을 기대하기 어렵고, 이러한 현상은 앞으로도 지속될 가능성이 높다. 따라서 섬 연구의 활로를 역사학을 중심으로 인문지리학과 자연지리학과의 학제 간 교류와 융합에서 찾아야 할 필요가 있다. 지난 2000년대부터 섬 관련 연구 단체가 조직되면서 역사학과 인문지리학 분야에서 새로운 연구가 이루어지길 기대하였다. 특히 해양레저에 대한 일반인들의 관심이 높아지면서 섬의 활용은 국가 차원에서도 관심의 대상이 되었다. 그 결과 섬관련 연구 성과도 많이 축적되고 있는 실정이며 전문 전공자도 늘어나는 추세이다. 이제 섬 연구의 새로운 연구 방법론이 개발될 수 있는 환경이 조성되기 시작했다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 섬과 관련된 자료들이 방대하여 체계적인 정리와 이용이 어렵다는 것이 현실적인 장벽이라고 할 수 있다. 현재 이를 적극적으로 활용할수 있는 방안의 모색이 절실하다. 본 연구의 목표는 역사 속의 섬 지명 및 관련 자료들의 내용을 검토 분석하고, 색인어를 축출하여 그 내용에 따라 분류·체계화하여 데이터베이스화하는 것이다. 이렇게 집적된 방대한 자료를 효과적으로 이용할 수 있는 방안을 마련하여, 학문각 분야에서 이용할 수 있는 전문 자료의 한계를 극복하고자 한다. 이를 통해 역사학과 지리학 연구자들 간의 자료의 적극적인 활용과 정보 소통을 유도할 수 있을 것이다. 또한 새로운 자료의 탐색을 통한 연구방법론의 확장 및 역사학과 지리학 간의 학제적 교류를 유도하여 새로운 연구기반을 구축할 수 있도록 하려 한다. 본 연구에서 얻어진 결과물은 웹서비스가 가능하도록 하여, 섬 관련 전문 연구자뿐만 아니라 일반인도 쉽게 접근 활용할 수 있도록 공개할 예정이다.
Island of the study was conducted much in human geography and physical geography than study of History. Further, research materials were not integrated and Individual researchers were collected literature materials. However, only the literature materials that individual researchers have collected, it is difficult to expect any more research results. Such a phenomenon is likely to continue in the future. Therefore, island studies must be advanced through the fusion and interdisciplinary exchange of natural geography and humanities geography around the history. Since 2000, As soon as the island research organizations was organized, I expected that new research is carried out in the field of history and human geography. It is because so many of the island related documents have not been organized in a systematic manner. Currently, it must seek scheme that can take advantage of these materials actively. This study reviews and analyzes the contents of the named islands and related materials to be found in history, and classify according to which a database to organize information after the ouster index terms. Collection organized material in this way, it will be widely used in a number of academic disciplines. As well as the results obtained in this study is expected to be open to the public to take advantage of easily accessible web services.
