이 연구는 문화기술적 참여관찰과 면담을 사용하여, 통합학급을 운영하는 세 중학교를 사례로 통합학급과 특수학급에서 이루어지는 수업과 활동을 기술, 분석, 해석하고 있으며, 이를 토대로 통합교육의 의미를 밝히고 있다. 장애학생들은 통합학급에서 “열외”의 대상으로 교과 수업에서 소외되고 있다. 통합교사들은 장애학생을 소외시키는 데 대한 미안함과 동시에 이들에 대한 부담감을 수업에서 가지고 있다. 그러나, 장애학생들을 위한 별도의 학습지원을 해주기에는 한계가 있다. 장애학생들은 학습도움실에서 적극적으로 수업에 참여하며, 사회적응훈련 활동을 통해 사회생활에 대한 적응 능력을 키워나간다. 통합학급 운영사례를 볼 때, 통합교육은 장애학생과 비장애학생에게 ‘모방’과 ‘인정’으로서 의미를 가진다. 장애학생들은 비장애학생들을 모델로 하여 모방함으로써 사회 적응을 하게 되며, 비장애학생들은 장애학생들과 통합교육의 경험을 공유하면서 장애학생들을 동등한 친구로 인정하게 된다. 이와 같은 통합교육은 장애학생과 비장애학생 모두가 더불어 사는 상생의 교육이라 할 수 있다.

The Meaning of the Inclusive Education in the Inclusive Class This study describes, analyzes and interprets the activity and the class in both the inclusive class and the special class at three middle school. Also this study makes clear the meaning of the inclusive education. This study uses ethnographic method. The handicapped student alienates by teachers in the class. Teachers feel sorry for an alienation and a responsibility at that same time. The handicapped students participate in the class actively at the special class. In addition, they experience the several program of the social adjustment. On the basis of the result, I intend to interpret the meaning of the inclusive education. The inclusive education have the meaning of 'imitation' and 'recognition'.
