이 논문은 유럽의 미디어교육 흐름 속에서 유럽연합 차원에서 공동개발하고 있는 멘토 프로젝트와 유럽의 미디어교육 역사를 살펴보는 것으로서 프랑스의 미디어교육 공교육화를 위한 준비과정과 그 현황을 파악하여 종국에는 한국의 미디어교육 공교육화에 대비한 해외사례 선행연구가 되는 것을 목표로 한다.멘토 프로젝트는 유럽연합까지 참여하여 지중해 연안국가들 사이의 미디어 교육의 효율성을 극대화할 수 있는 최선의 방법을 찾은 노력의 결실로서, 6개의 모듈로 구성된 지중해연안 국가들뿐만이 아닌 전 세계 미디어교육에 사용될 수 있는 자율적인 프로그램이다. 이처럼 프랑스는 미디어교육을 공교육으로 편입시키기 위해서 정부차원에서 많은 노력과 지원을 하고 있다.


Analysis of Media Education of E.U. and France toward Formal Education The Mentor project is run under the auspices of UNESCO, with support from the European Commission. The project is targeted at trainee secondary school teachers from countries bordering the Mediterranean. It aims to provide them with materials and skills to teach media education that will enable their students to analyze and make best use the media. One of the Mentor Project´s main objectives is to develop an educational module about Media Education for teacher training in the Mediterranean region. With European Commission, France make a commitment to raise public understanding and awareness of media literacy, in relation to the media of communication, information and expression; to advocate the importance of media literacy in the development of educational, cultural, political, social and economic policy; to support the principle that every European citizen of any age should have opportunities, in both formal and informal education, to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to increase their enjoyment, understanding and exploration of the media.
