본 연구는 Schwab이 제안한 실제적 탐구의 원리와 기예의 성격을 밝히고, 이를 바탕으로 그가 여전히 실증주의적 전통에서 벗어나지 못했다는 비판의 타당성을 검증하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 그가 발표한 the practical 시리즈의 첫 번째와 두 번째 논문을 주 텍스트로 삼고 그의 나머지 논문들과 그의 이론에 대한 비판들을 보조적인 텍스트로 활용하였다. 본 연구에서 실제적 탐구 원리는 이론적 탐구가 지닌 스코프의 한계와 관점의 제한을 극복하기 위하여 이론들을 절충하는 기예와 추상화의 위험에 맞서서 실제상황 속에서의 탐구를 강조하는 실제적 기예로 구성된다. 다음으로 실제적 원리가 인식론적으로 편협하다는 비판은 절충적 기예를 대상으로 할 때는 타당하지만, 실제적 기예를 감안하면 지나친 주장이라 할 수 있다. Dewey의 탐구 논리는 실제적 탐구의 원리가 인식론적 타당성을 확보하기 위하여 실제적 기예와 절충적 기예의 상호연관성을 명확하게 기술해야 하는 이유를 제공한다.


An Investigation on the Principles of the Practical on Curriculum and the Criticism on them The purpose of this study was to investigate on the principles of the practical on curriculum and to examine the justifiability of criticism on them. To achieve this purpose, the method of this study was to review and analyze the related literature. The main resources consisted of the first and second articles among the practical series by Schwab. And the others' books and articles by Schwab and the articles on criticism of the principles of the practical by other scholars were analyzed, too. First, the principle of the practical represented that the practical problems could be solved by practical inquiry in real situation and applying theories eclectically. Second, it was made clear that the criticism on the principles of the practical derived from Schwab‘s being insufficient description on the arts of practical and on the relationship between the arts of practical and the arts of eclectic, compared to Dewey's logic of inquiry. In conclusion, the principles of the practical being a more useful tool on understanding and reforming curriculum, it gave suggestions that it needed to describe fully the traits of the arts of practical and the transaction between arts of practical and arts of eclectic.
