This article argues that the function of local communities has been more emphasized in modern rural area. As in-migration to rural area has been increased in Korea, the traditional rural communities has been challenged to mingle with new commers. In that process, the cooperation in local economic and social communities contributes to the integration of new commers in the local society. While the traditional communities simply help each other in their farming work, the new communities collaborate in every dimension of local life(culture, social services, education, new marketing strategies, new farming technologies, etc.). This paper examines the new characteristics of rural communities with case of Goesan-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do. Goesan-gun has more than 40-year in-migration history that we can find the implication from the changes of community characteristics, as well as the examples of various community activities created by systemizing economic and social cooperation in the traditional rural communities.
