Joyce’s Literary Strategies from the Point of View of ‘Harmony/Irony’ in Dubliners Jongkook Youn This thesis focuses on the process in which the literary strategy and theme in Dubliners lead up to an organic unity by an aesthetic order. The big themes, paralysis and liberation, for which Joyce sought in all his works have a center and a unity. This unity has an organic structure, which Joyce, through the mouth of Stephen in Stephen Hero and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, calls “an organized composite structure.” And this structure has a similarity to the structure of irony which New Criticism emphasizes as a principle of structure. Joyce employes literary strategies and various narrative techniques to make his fiction a harmonious and radiant wholeness.Joyce embodies aesthetic formalism based on Modernism, keeping in mind an aesthetic sense. This is related to the persistent and self - conscious reflection in which he achieves the organic unity of theme and literary strategies. From a wider point of view, the aesthetic order for which Joyce is seeking was employed to reunite the paralyzed and split world of modern man caused by World War Ⅰand Ⅱ at the beginning of the 20C.
