본 연구는 근대 이전 동아시아 삼국의 바다와 육지의 경계인식을 지도를 통해 비교･분석하여 한국･중국･일본 삼국의 해륙 경계인식의 변화와 여기에 동반한 분쟁의 역사적 의미를 고찰하는 것이 목적이다. 지도는 인간의 마음속에 그려진 세계의 표상으로 인간 내부의 정신적 세계와 외부의 물리적 세계의 매개체이며 다양한 규모에서 인간 정신의 보편성을 이해하는 중요하고 근본적인 수단으로 문화를 반영하는 거울이다. 따라서 지도를 역사해석에 활용하는 것은 매우 의미 있는 작업이라 할 수 있다. 특히 전근대 동아시아의 바다와 육지에서의 경계인식을 파악하는데 있어 지도를 이용하는 작업은 대단히 중요한 의미를 지니고 있다. 근대 이전에 제작된 고지도는 각 국의 영토인식 변화에 따라 국가간 경계인식의 변화를 살펴볼 수 있는 중요한 자료이다. 기본적으로 동아시아에 있어서 근대 이전 시기의 국가간 경계인식은 제국주의 침략이전 까지는 명확히 구분지어지지 않았으나 제국주의 세력확장 이후 국가간 경계가 분명하게 구분되어 짐을 알 수 있다. 이후 영토인식의 확장에 따라 각국간에 영토분쟁 문제가 발생하고, 전근대에서 근대로 이행되어지는 시기에 일제의 제국주의 침탈과 식민지에서의 해방으로 이어지면서 육지에서의 국경성립에 따른 문제, 바다에서의 섬확보와 어업권 확보에 따른 해양경계선 문제가 불분명하게 매듭지어진 결과 현재까지 영토분쟁이 끊이지 않고 있다.
