Pusan Medical Center and Pusan National University Hospital that are the most valuable medical center of Pusan were established after Korean war in 1950. This essay attempts to rearrange the historical facts about those hospitals and to revaluate those meanings in medical and regional history. The pourpose of the first chapter is to retrace the course of the establishment of Pusan Medical Center. According to this progress, it could be said that the changes from the Jaesang Hospital to Pusan City Hospital, and to the Pusan Burip Hospital resulted in the establishment of this hospital. The second chapter is focused on the analysis of the process of the establishment. In the wartime, there was a kind of the united university. After the war, the government of Korea made the local national universities including Pusan National University. At the same time the Pusan National University Hospital and its attached school of nursing were made. Finally, the question to be discussed is who succeeded to the Jaesang Hospital, Pusan Medical Center or Pusan National University Hospital. In my opinion, both of Pusan Medical Center and Pusan National University Hospital succeeded to the properties of the Jaesang Hospital which had been the first western style medical institution. They have become the backbones of community medical centers as the public medical institution over one hundred years. Although the Jaesang Hospital had some imperialistic features, it greatly contributed to improving the sanitation and the health of Korean people and to developing the Korean medical industry. Therefore the Jaesang Hospital had an important effect in the history of medicine in Korea. But these valuable roles, in the community in the history of medicine have been denied because of their colonial experiences of Japanese imperialism. All of the our past experiences, whether they were good or not, are our own. It has passed for sixty years after the ceasefire. This essay will contribute to the work of rearranging the history of Pusan Medical Center and Pusan National University Hospital and to the reconstruction of the local history of Pusan and the modern history of medicine in Korea.
