아브라함 카이퍼에 의해서 본격적으로 주창된 일반은혜의 교리는 처음부터 심각한 도전에 직면하였다. 미국의 경우 이 교리 때문에 기독개혁교회가 1924년 총회에서 분열되었으며 아직까지도 치유가 되고 있지 않다. 시간이 많이 지난 오늘날 그때 당시와 환경이 많이 바뀌면서 일반은혜의 교리는 여 러 각도에서 다시 논의가 되기 시작하였다. 일반은혜를 동의하는 이들도 오 늘날 자기반성을 하면서 기존의 입장을 조금씩 수정하기 시작하였다. 본 논 문은 1924년에 결정된 3가지 논점을 중심으로 일반은혜에 관한 핵심적 이슈 들을 비평적으로 검토하려고 한다. 이러한 검토를 통해 독자들은 일반은혜 와 관련된 논쟁들을 보다 정확하게 이해할 것이고, 일반은혜의 장점뿐만 아 니라 약점과 한계들도 분명하게 인식할 수 있게 될 것이다.
The doctrine of common grace, which was proposed by Abraham Kuyper, a renowned Dutch theologian in 19th century, was severely challenged from the beginning. Specifically in the USA, the Christian Reformed Church was split at the Synod 1924 at Kalamazoo due to the controversy on this doctrine and the wound has not been recovered until now. After several decades, however, the situation has greatly changed and the doctrine has begun to be discussed from the various points of view. Even those who supported the doctrine of common grace started to revisit and revise their own view. The essay critically reviews the doctrine by focusing on the three points which were the core issues at the 1924 synod. This critical review helps the readers to better understand the essential points that the doctrine has and to clearly see the weaknesses and limitations of the doctrine as well as its strong points.
