이 글은 현대국어에 화석처럼 남아 있는 어형들을 역사적 · 통시적 관점에서 해석해 보려는 의도에서 작성되었다. 크게 보아 음운론적 화석 · 형태론적 화석·통사론적 화석이 주된 대상이 되었으나, 방언학적 화석과 문체론적 화석도 조명의 대상이 되었다. 아쉽게도 의미론적 화석이라고 할 만한 예들은 검토하지 못하였다. 각론을 다룬 뒤의 글들에 대한 총론의 성격을 띠기 때문에 다양한 예들에 나타나는 현상을 중심으로 하여 필자의 해석을 가미하였다. 특히 고립성을 띠는 예들에 주목하였다.
This thesis aims to interpret the linguistic fossils in present-day Korean historically and diachronically. The phonological fossils, the morphological fossils, the syntactic fossils and dialectological fossils were dealt with, but the semantic fossils were not focussed on. Since this thesis bears the characteristics of the introductory remarks as to the several specific essays, the phenomena which various linguistically isolated examples showed were interpreted.
