종결어미 ‘-ㄹ걸’은 ‘추측’과 ‘후회/아쉬움’의 두 가지 기능을 가지며, 기능에 따라 상이한 문법적 특성을 보여 준다. 선행 연구에서는 흔히 두 가지 기능의 ‘-ㄹ걸’이 모두 ‘-ㄹ 것을’에서 생겨났으며, 다의어로 간주되어야 하는 것으로 설명되어 왔다. 본 연구에서는 두 기능의 다양한 특성에 대해 세밀하게 검토하고, 그 결과를 바탕으로, ‘추측’의 ‘-ㄹ걸’은 ‘-ㄹ 걸세(<-ㄹ 것일세)’의 뒷부분이 절단되면서 새로운 종결어미가 되었고, ‘후회/아쉬움’의 ‘-ㄹ걸’은 ‘-ㄹ 것을’에 뒤따르는 부분이 절단되어 종결어미가 되었다고 추정하였다. 또한 반사실적 가정(‘… -었더라면 … -었을걸’) 구문에 쓰이는 ‘-었을걸’은, 흔히 ‘후회’의 ‘-ㄹ걸’로 간주되기도 하였으나, ‘추측’의 ‘-ㄹ걸’로 간주하는 것이 합리적이라고 보았다.
Final ending ‘-eulgeol(ㄹ걸)’ expresses ‘guess’ and ‘regret’, and has different grammatical characteristics according to what it means. Most of previous studies regarded ‘-eulgeol(ㄹ걸)’ as a polysemy and as grammaticalized from ‘-eul geos-eul(ㄹ 것을)’. However, this paper argues that ‘-eulgeol’ of ‘guess’ and ‘-eulgeol’ of ‘regret’ are different final endings which have different origins, the former from ‘-eul geos-il-se(ㄹ 것일세)’ and the latter from ‘-eul geos-eul(ㄹ 것을)’. This paper also argues that ‘-eulgeol(을걸)’ in the counterfactual construction(… -eoss-deo-ra-myeon(었더라면) … eoss-eulgeol(었을걸)) is not ‘-eulgeol’ of ‘regret’ but ‘-eulgeol’ of ‘guess’.
