지시사 수식 명사구는 주로 관형사 수식 명사구와 동격 명사구의 구조로 파악되어 왔으나, 통사적 특징과 응집 관계를 살펴보면, 관형사 수식 명사구, 대명사 수식 명사구, 대명사 동격 명사구의 세 가지 하위 유형으로 나타남을 알 수 있다. 관형사 수식 명사구와 대명사 수식 명사구는 관형격 구성으로의 교체 여부, 복수 표지 ‘들’이 결합하였을 때의 구조 분석, 피수식 명사(구) 내부의 병렬 구성적 확장 여부에서 차이를 보이며, 대명사 수식 명사구와 대명사 동격 명사구는 피수식 명사(구)를 생략하였을 때의 의미 해석, 조사 ‘의’의 실현 여부, 피수식 명사(구)의 복수 해석, 피수식 명사(구) 내부의 병렬 구성적 확장 여부에서 차이를 보인다. 이러한 유형별 차이는 응집 관계의 차이에서 기인하는데, 관형사 수식 명사구는 피수식 명사(구)가 어휘적 응집 관계를 이루어 두 개의 응집 묶음을 가지게 되며, 따라서 명사구 전체의 의미 해석에 선행 문맥이 영향을 미친다. 반면 대명사 수식 명사구는 참조(reference)라는 하나의 응집 묶음만을 가지기 때문에 후행 명사(구)는 선행 문맥의 영향에서 비교적 자유롭다. 대명사 동격 명사구의 경우에는 관형사 수식 명사구와 같이 두 개의 응집 묶음을 가지지만, 지시사와 후행 명사(구)의 지시 대상이 동지시 관계에 있다는 점에서 관형사 수식 명사구와는 그 특징을 달리한다.
Previous studies have proven demonstrative-modified NPs to be classified roughly into two types: demonstrative pre-noun modified NPs and appositive NPs. But a look at syntactic characteristics and cohesion relations suggests that the demonstrative-modified NPs are classified into three types: demonstrative pre-noun modified NPs, demonstrative pronoun modified NPs, and appositive NPs. pre-noun modified NPs and pronoun modified NPs differ in the replacement with a genitive NP, the combination with the plural marker, and the internal expansion of a modified NP. pronoun modified NPs and appositive NPs also differ in omitting a modified NP, the realization of genitive case marker ‘ǔy’, the semantic interpretation of a NP with the plural marker, and the internal expansion of a modified NP. These differences are caused by the difference of cohesion relations according to the type of demonstrative-modified NPs. The semantic interpretation and syntactic characteristics in demonstrative pre-noun modified NPs are affected by the preceded context because pre-noun modified NPs have two ties in cohesion relations. Demonstrative pronoun modified NPs, on the other hand, are comparatively free from the preceded context because pronoun modified NPs have only one tie in cohesion relations. Appositive NPs have two ties in cohesion relations like pre-noun modified NPs; However, appositive NPs and pre-noun modified NPs differ in that the referent of a demonstrative and the referent of a modified NP in appositive NPs are co-referential.
