본 연구는 풍수지리가 지명형성에 영향을 미쳤다는 점에서 마산ㆍ창원ㆍ진해 통합시의 시 명칭을 풍수적 차원에서 제언하기 위한 것이다. 3개시는 2010년에 이미 창원시라는 통합시로 지명이 확정되었다. 따라서 본 연구는 이에 대한 반론이 아니라, 향후 지명제정에 한국의 고유문화 하나로서 다양한 지명형성에 영향을 미쳐 온 풍수적인 측면에서의 제언에 중점을 두었다. 풍수 형국론은 산천의 모양을 사람, 동물, 식물, 문자, 사물 등에 비유하는 것으로 지명형성에 많은 영향을 미쳤다. 현재까지의 형국론에 영향을 받은 지명의 유형은 첫째, 주산의 이름을 지명으로 차용한 경우 둘째, 전체 입지의 형국에서 지명을 차용한 경우 셋째, 형국의 보조형으로 지명을 차용한 경우로 나눌 수 있다. 이 중 첫째와 둘째의 방법으로 통합시의 지명을 제언하였다. 첫째 주산의 이름을 차용할 경우 통합시의 주산은 봉림산(鳳林山)이므로 봉림시(鳳林市)를 제언하였다. 봉황은 태평성대와 고귀한 인물의 탄생을 의미하는 상징성을 가질 수 있다. 둘째, 전체 입지의 형국은 회룡고조형(回龍顧祖形)이므로 회룡시(回龍市)를 제언하였다. 용은 제왕의 고귀함, 다재다능, 길상(吉祥)의 상징성을 가짐으로써 해당지역 거주민들에게 심리적 안정감과 자부심 등의 긍정적 영향을 기대할 수 있다.
Considering that the place names was affected by feng-shui, this study intends to suggest the name of consolidated city of MasanㆍChangwonㆍJinhae in the viewpoint of feng-shui. The name of 3 cities was already fixed as Changwon in 2010. Thus, this study is not a refutation against the name, but puts emphasis on the suggestion in the aspect of feng-shui that has affected diverse place names as one of own cultures of Korea in establishing place names in the future. Feng-shui hyeonggug theory(形局論 : theory that compares mountain to animal, plant) has considerably affected establishing place names by comparing the shape of mountain to human, animal, plant, character and things. The examples of this place names are as follows. First, the name of main mountain(主山:mountain behind the location) is used as place names. Second, the situation of all location is mostly used as place names. Thus, if the name of main mountain is used, Bongrim city(鳳林市) was suggested. The phoenix may have the symbolism which means peaceful reign and the birth of noble person. Further, Hoeryong city(回龍市) was suggested as the situation of whole location. As dragon has the nobility of king, versatility and the symbolism of good auspices, it is expected to positively affect the psychological stability and pride of residents in the relevant region.
