AB - Xin(心), often translated into 'mind-heart' is a major problematique in traditional Confucian discourses. In this paper, I tried to examine Dong Zhongshu's usage of Xin(心). Firstly, I explain that Dong Zhongshu, the typical Han Confucian scholar discussed the mind-heart(心) in the context of cosmology. Secondly, I pointed out that in Dong's theory of self cultivation, the mind-heart and the body could be transformed into each other. Dong said that there were two ways of self cultivation : cultivating the mind-heart(養心)and caring the body(養體), and he thought that the two could influence each other through the qi(氣). I also examine the usage of De(德) in Chunqiufanlu, and the five cardinal virtues(五常),benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and sincerity in the context of the Confucian theories on Wuxing(五行).
