This study analyzed research and policy trends of Korean national parks' resource and visitor management over the last 40 years. In particular, it examined if there were any interrelationships between the research and policy trends and how the relationships were formed. Using content analysis technique, research articles on national park resource and visitor management appearing in three major journals on national park study, including tourism science, were critically reviewed. Books and newspaper articles, which showed the history and trend of Korean national park service policy were also scrutinized. Then, the characteristics of three different periods of Korea national park research and policy were analyzed. Results of this study showed that a very close relationship between research and practice in Korea national park was found as was in the United States. Based on the findings of this study, future research directions and measures for a better cooperation between research and practice concerning Korean national parks were discussed.
우리나라에서는 지난 1987년 국립공원관리를 전담하는 공공기관인 국립공원관리공단이 출범하는 것을 전후로 하여 국립공원의 자연자원에 대한 조사와 모니터링 그리고 탐방객에 대한 사회과학적인 연구가 시작돼 지난 25년간 국립공원에 관한 다양한 연구들이 이루어져 왔다. 하지만 우리나라에서는 아직까지 지난 4반세기 동안 국립공원관리와 관련하여 이루어진 연구들을 조망해보고, 이러한 연구들이 실제 국립공원 관리정책과 어떤 식으로 연관성을 가져왔는지를 파악해보는 연구는 거의 없었다. 본 연구는 이러한 문제의식에 시작되었는데, 본 연구에서는 먼저 내용분석법과 문헌연구법을 이용하여 우리나라에서 이루어진 국립공원에 대한 연구를 시기별, 연구주제별로 나누어 살펴보았다. 이어 학계의 국립공원에 대한 연구와 정부의 국립공원관리정책의 변화과정간의 관계분석을 통해 학문과 실무분야의 상호영향을 파악하고자 하였으며, 마지막으로 국립공원과 관련된 추후 연구방향과 관학협력방안을 제안하였다. 본 연구는 우리나라의 대표적인 관광자원 중의 하나라고 할 수 있는 국립공원의 자원 및 방문객 관리에 있어 학계의 연구와 실무분야 정책간의 상호영향관계를 비판적으로 성찰하여 보았다는 점에서 학문적인 의의가 있다고 할 수 있고, 여가관광학계와 국립공원 관리를 담당하는 실무자들 간의 협력방안을 제시한다는 측면에서 실무적인 가치가 있다고 할 수 있다.
