로티는 듀이의 프래그머티즘을 계승, 발전시킨 네오프래그머티즘의 사상가로 알려져 있다. 로티는 전통적 이원론의 관점을 부정하는 듀이의 참여자적 지식론을 수용하여 그의 반정초주의적 인식론으로 발전시켰다. 즉, 전통적 이원론에서 말하는 지식의 궁극적 토대란 존재하지 않으며 이제까지 인류가 발전시킨 일체의 지식은 시공간적 상황에 따른 인간적 참여와 해석의 산물일 뿐이라는 것이다. 따라서 자아의 확대와 지식의 발전은 기존의 진리를 수용하는 데 있는 것이 아니라 지속적 대화를 통해 끊임없이 자신의 신념과 지식을 재구성해감으로써 가능하다. 이러한 로티의 관점 밑바탕에는 일체의 지식과 신념이 개방적 의사소통과 참여를 통해 변화 가능하다는 듀이의 교호작용적 언어관이 깔려있다. 듀이가 보기에 언어는 화자와 대상을 연결하는 제3의 매개도구가 아니라 삶의 상황에 적응하기 위한 행위적 수단이며, 동시에 공동의 삶의 질을 개선하는 공유된 의미체계이다. 그런데 로티는 이러한 듀이의 언어관을 수용하면서도, 특정한 측면에서 듀이의 관점을 변용, 발전시키고 있다. 그것은 메타포적 언어관, 민주적 언어관, 그리고 편재적 언어관이라는 세 가지 측면에서 조망될 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 로티의 언어관에 담긴 듀이 사상의 영향이 정확히 어디까지이고, 또한 어디서부터 로티의 독자적인 변용이 일어났는지를 이해하고자 한다. 이러한 작업은 듀이의 관점에서 로티의 언어관을 비판적으로 재음미하는 일이 될 뿐만 아니라, 네오프래그머티즘의 언어관이 현대 교육에 주는 시사를 탐색하는 데에도 도움이 될 것이다.
R. Rorty is well known as a representative thinker of Neo-pragmatism who succeeds to the pragmatic thought of J. Dewey. Rorty accepts Dewey's participant theory of knowledge that rejects the traditional dualism and the ultimate foundation of truth. In Rorty's view, all objects of knowledge is the result of human participation and interpretation in the temporal and spacial situation of life. Therefore, the extension of genuine self and development of knowledge do not come from the fixed knowledges, but the reconstruction of the previous cognition and belief by means of open conversations. Underlying Rorty's such viewpoint is Dewey's viewpoint of language. In Dewey's view, language is not the third medium that connects speaker and object. Language is the behavioral means to adapt for the situation of life, and the symbolistic tool to improve the quality of life. And all beliefs and knowledges that base on language are not fixed, but are changeable by open conversation and reflective inquiry. However, accepting Dewey's view in general, Rorty alters Dewey's viewpoint of language in three aspects: view of language as metaphor, view of democratic language, and view of ubiquitous language. In this context, this study is to understand the extent and limit of the influences of Dewey on Rorty's viewpoint of language. It is expected that this study is to elucidate the relation between Dewey and Rorty, and is helpful to search for the educative implications of Rorty's view.
