The purpose of this thesis is to classify the small clause and analyze the syntactic categories of it. Chomsky(1981) defines a clause as follows: S' → COMP S, S → NP INFL VP. He says the small clause is a kind of clause, but it does not have INFL and copular. There are two types of small clause. One is a complement small clause and the other is an adjunct small clause. The complement small clause is subcategorized and isn’t thematically independent, but the adjunct small clause is not subcategorized and is thematically independent. The analyses of small clause are divided into constitutional analyses and non-constitutional analyses. Constitutional analyses for small clauses regard the small clause as one constituent. For the constitutional analyses ; Chomsky(1981) presents S category, Kitagawa(1985) presents S' category, Hornstein & Lightfoot(1984, 1987) suggests INFL' category analysis. On the other hand, for non-constitutional analyses, Williams(1980, 1983) and Rothstein(1983) suggest namely the subject-predicate theory. The small clause is not so simple in nowadays’ theory as the traditional grammar.
