The goal of this paper is to take issue with the common assumption that the inclusive present tense, which is used in durative and habitual statements, constitutes the basic meanings of the present tense in English. In this study, we suggest that such a view is neither conceptually sound nor empirically well-supported. Rather, the inclusive present tense should, we propose, be subject to pragmatic or certain metaphysical constraints. We show that a new perspective of the inclusive present tense, which is based on the metaphysical distinction between structural and phenomenal knowledge, not only solves some empirical problems arising from the inclusive view but also explains away the phenomena that have been considered exceptional aspects of the present tense.
