제주도에 세 가지 본풀이가 심방에 의해서 전승되는 사실은 뚜렷한 사실이다. 당신본풀이, 일반신본풀이, 조상신본풀이 등이 그것이다.攀 세 가지 본풀이의 상관성에 대해서는 김헌선, 제주도와 아이누의 구비서사시 비교 연구, 구비문학연구 제14집(한국구비문학회, 2001)에서 상세히 논의한 바 있다.攀攀 이 세 가지 본풀이의 성격은 각기 다른데, 제주도 무속의 종합적 제전인 큰굿에서 모두 구연되며 큰굿의 본주집 형편에 따라서 조상신본풀이와 당신본풀이가 각기 다르게 구연된다. 따라서 큰굿을 정밀하게 관찰함으로써 이 세 가지 본풀이의 공통점과 함께 차이점을 인지할 수 있다.심방은 본주집의 형편과 사정에 따라서 본주가 사는 지역의 본향당본을 특정한 제차에서 구연하고 이와 함께 시집을 오게 되었다면 친정과 시집의 조상본을 동시에 구연한다. 조상본은 굿하는 본주집의 특성을 지니므로 철저하게 혈연성을 갖는다. 그러나 이와 다르게 당신본풀이는 지역성을 갖는다. 때로는 당신본풀이와 조상신본풀이가 서로 분간되지 않아서 조상신본풀이가 당신본풀이로 발전한 경우도 있다. 예컨대 <현씨일월당본풀이>와 같은 사례는 조상신본풀이가 당신본풀이로 발전한 적절한 사례이다.이에 견주어 일반신본풀이는 혈연성이나 지역성을 갖지 않으며 인간 모두를 관장하는 천지만물의 천문과 인문 현상을 신격화한 것이므로 한정된 지역성이나 선택적 혈연성을 갖지 않는다. 오히려 예사 무당 모두가 아는 보편성을 지니고 있다. 일반신본풀이는 선택적인 것이 아니라 필수적으로 구연하는 보편성을 갖기 때문에 제주도 고유의 요소가 아니라 우리나라 본풀이 전반적 요소와 흡사한 내용으로 되어 있다. 일반신본풀이가 보편성을 지녔다고 하는 것은 모든 심방이 구연할 줄 알고, 예사 굿에서 반드시 구연해야 하고, 내용적으로 볼 때에 우리나라 본풀이와 구체적으로 일치하기 때문에 보편적이라고 말하는 것이다.우선 이 논의에서는 하나의 유형을 상정하고 이를 다루었는데 그것이 곧 <광청아기본>과 <구슬할망본>이다. 이 두 가지 본풀이는 내용의 결말에서 상이함에도 불구하고 구조적인 공통점이 있음이 확인되었다. 제주도의 남성과 육지의 여성이 기본적인 주인공으로 설정되어 있는데 이러한 설정은 제주도의 마을신의 내력을 말하는 당신본풀이의 그것과 다르지 않다. 다만 차이가 있다면 제주도의 남성이 육지로 가서 그곳의 여성과 만나는 이야기가 근간을 이루는 점에서 차이가 있음이 확인된다. 달리 말하면 제주도에 전승되는 본풀이의 근본을 부정하지 않고 있다는 점이다. 두 번째 사실은 이러한 이야기가 동아시아 지역에 전하고 있는 이야기이면서도 역사적으로 아주 오랜 내력을 가지고 있는 것임이 확인된다. 구체적으로 우리는 두 가지 방증을 들어서 이 이야기의 분포와 역사성을 논의할 수 있었다. 하나는 宋高僧傳에 전하는 <善妙說話>이고, 다른 하나는 高麗史世系의 作帝建이야기이다. 같은 구조를 지닌 두 가지 이야기가 동아시아의 광포성을 지니고, 동시에 역사적인 내력을 지녔다고 하는 것은 이 이야기가 간접적으로 <조상신본풀이>가 오래 되었음을 추론하는 근거가 되는 것임을 말한다.
