이 연구는 함경도에 전승되는 특정한 무속서사시에 대한 유형적 특징과 의미를 탐색한 결과이다. <짐가제굿>은 주인공이 악인형 부부 인물에게 피살되고 이 억울한 죽음을 해결하기 위하여 고을을 다스리는 인물이 저승에 사자를 파견하고 그 인물이 저승에 갔다와서 그 원인을 해결하는 것이 핵심적 소인이 된다. 이 이야기는 피살자,살해자, 해결자 등을 동시에 고려해야 하는 서사구조를 지니고 있는 무당서사시이다. 동일한 이야기가 여러 가지 자료에 전하고 있으며, 서사민요, 다른 지역의 본풀이등에서 전승되고 있는 점을 볼 수 있다. 그만큼 이 이야기는 항간에 널리 퍼져 있을뿐만 아니라 다른 민족에게서도 거의 유사한 이야기가 발견되는 점을 확인하게 된다. 그러한 각도에서 이 이야기는 서사시의 문학적 기능을 하는 중요한 것임이 분명하여졌다. 더욱이 이 무당서사시에서 긴요한 것이 결과적으로 저승 관념을 보여주고 있는데,이 저승 관념은 고유한 저승관과 함께 외래에서 유래된 불교적 세계관이 복합되면서이루어진 결과임을 알 수 있다. 저승의 시왕은 변개가 불가능하지만, 그 밑에 종사하는 차사를 긴요하게 취급하면서 이 인물을 통해서 희화화하는 특징이 있는 작품이 이무당서사시임을 파악하게 되었다.
This study presents the result of exploration on typologicalcharacteristics and meaning of specific shaman epics transmitted inHamgyong Province. The core story of <Jimgajegut> involves a protagonistmurdered by a married couple of villains, the head of village who sendsa messenger to the underworld in order to examine this unjustly death andsettles the case by visiting the underworld himself. This is a shaman epicwith narrative structure in which the victim of murder, murderers andproblem solver must be considered simultaneously. The same story is handed down through different sources of data, andit is transmitted in epic folk song and bonpuri (shamanistic myth) in otherregions. This story is not only wide-spread within the region, andextremely similar stories are found in other ethnic groups. From suchviewpoint, this story has verified to have an important literary function ofan epic. Furthermore, this shaman epic shows an important concept of theunderworld, and this concept of the underworld has resulted fromcombination of unique regional view on the underworld and Buddhisticidea derived from overseas. While Ten Kings of the underworld cannot bealtered, this shaman epic was characterized by placement of importanceon the messengers serving the kings and making caricature of the figure.
