이 글은 조선후기 서원의 위상 변화를 경주 옥산서원 사례를 통해 확인해보려는 것이다. 옥산서원은 도산서원과 더불어 조선후기 영남을 대표하는 서원으로서 여타 서원들에 비하여 사회적 위상이 매우 높았던 곳이다. 이러한 관심은 1839년 강당인 ‘구인당’을 중건하는 과정에서 구체적으로 확인이 된다. 사액현판의 소실로 재사액을 요구하는 논의가 道內에서 일어나 그해 11월에 왕명에 의해 賜額이 내려지고, 이어서 12월 13일에 致祭가 거행되었다. 이처럼 조정에서 재사액을 명하고, 그와는 별개로 치제를 행한 것은 중앙정부에서도 옥산서원이 영남을 대표하는 서원임을 인정하는 것이었다. 옥산서원의 확고한 영남지역내의 위상은 강당을 중건한 후의 낙성식에서 경상감사와 경주부윤을 비롯한 인근 고을의 수령들이 대거 참석하고, 유생 만여 명이 참석한 백일장이 시행된 것에서도 알 수 있다. 하지만 17세기 초반 회재의 문묘종사를 반대하는 정인홍의 상소 이래로 경상우도의 남명학파와의 관계는 멀어져서 강당 중건시에도 경상우도 사림의 협조는 확인되지 않는다. 즉 당시 옥산서원의 영향력은 경상좌도와 경상우도의 대구․현풍을 중심으로 한 중부권에 국한되었다.
This study investigated changes of status of Seowon depending upon social change in the latter half of Joseon Dynasty by using case of Gyeongju Oksanseowon. Oksanseowon that represented Seowon in Yeongnam together with Dosanseowon in the latter half of Joseon Dynasty had very much high social status. As a result, Oksanseowon could recover its status to verify such a fact at rebuilding of 'Gu-in-dang' in 1839. Request for being given signboard from king was discussed in the province to be given in December in same year, and Chije according to king's order was done at Dosanseowon and Oksanseowon. As such, the Royal Court gave order of giving signboard again to do Chije and to admit of Oksanseowon representing Yeongnam. Oksanseowon built up status after rebuilding lecture hall again to attend construction ceremony by Gyeong-sang-gam-sa and Gyeong-ju-bu-yun and other governors at neighboring towns and to put signboard from the king with Chije Jemunpan and to open beg-il-jang attended by more than ten thousand Confucian scholars. Seowon could keep social status to preserve even at Daewongun's order of destruction of Seowon: After middle of the 19th century, Seowon worsened confrontation between legitimate son and bastard at Won-im-jik So-tong to be punished by the central government, and not only Gyeongju Sohn but also Yeoju Lee debated origin of science of Hoije Lee Eon-jeok to disturb Seowon operation and to destroy social status of Seowon.
