이 글은 『화엄경』 「여래출현품」에 담긴 문학성 연구-여래출현품」에 담긴 수사법과 현대문학성을 중심으로-에 대하여 살펴본 글이다. 문학은 예술적인 언어의 구조를 지니며, 그 독특한 예술적 구조의 우수성은 현대문학의 백미라고 할 수 있다. 이품에서는 평등의 결과를 밝히고 있는 품으로, 연기(緣起)와 성기(性起)는 불교의 핵심사상이다. 연기가 삼라만상우주의 모든 원인과 결과를 말하는 것이라면, 성기란 ‘지혜를 낸다. 가장 뛰어나다․의지하는바’의 뜻이라는 것이다. 따라서 성기(性起)란 여래의 성품을 일으키는 것은 여래출현과 동일한 개념이다. 『화엄경』 「여래출현품」에 담긴 修辭와 心象은 ‘화엄의 여래성기사상’을 다양한 수사적 표현과 심상(心象 image)인 물상 등으로써 구체화시키는데, 이것은 품에 핵심적인 전언역할을 하고 있다. 특히 작가는 문장을 짓는데 있어서 말을 효과적으로 적절하게 아름답게 쓰려는 방법을 생각하게 되는데, 문장의 기교는 표현의 기교를 의미하는 것이다. 이 품에서는 이러한 문장의 기교인 다양한 수사법을 사용하여 여래출현의 법을 명확히 하고 있다. 문학에서 심상(心象 image)은 언어에 의해 재현된 사물의 감각적 영상을 뜻하는데, 이 품에 나타난 심상은 마치 인드라망을 연상케 할 정도로 무수한 佛菩薩의 영상을 감각적으로 인식하게 해주고 있다. 『화엄 경』 「여래출현품」에 담긴 현대문학성은 고대소설에서 현대소설로 올수록 소설에서는 영웅에서 하층민까지 주인공이 바뀐다는 것을 들 수 있다. 즉 작가들이 작품을 통하여 하층민들 (중생, 평범한 사람들)속에서 어떤 삶의 진리를 발견할려고 하는 것과 「여래출현품」에서 작가가 衆生心속에서 부처의 모습을 발견하려고 하는 그러한 모습과 비슷하다는 것을 규명할 수 있다.
This study looks into rhetoric styles and contemporary literary value of 『Avatamsaka Sutra』 and 「Yeoraechulhyunpum」. Literature works are made of artistic lingual structures, and the excellence of such unique features is the best of contemporary literatures. This varga shows the result of equality. pratītyasamutpāda and Seonggi are the core idea of Buddhism. pratītyasamutpāda refers to all causes and effects of this universe, while seonggi means ‘prajñā, the best․dependable’. Therefore, how seonggi causes buddhatva of Tathāgata is the same consept as Yeoraechulhyunpum. 『Avatamsaka Sutra』 and 「Yeoraechulhyunpum」 has embodied ‘Avatamsaka's Tathāgata seonggi ideology’ using rhetorical expressions and images. those expressional factors work as fundamental conveyer of meanings. Especially, rhetorical styles the writer used have made lines more effective and beautiful. Because of this, the varga delivers dharma from appearance of Tathāgata clearly. image in a literature refers to reconstructed sensational image of an object. The images shown in this varga conveys sensational images of myriad of buddha bodhisattva, which is reminiscent of Indramang. The contemporary literary value of 『Avatamsaka Sutra』 and 「Yeoraechulhyunpum」 can be viewed from the fact how the protagonists in literature history gradually changed from heroes to commoners over time. the reason of this change may be said that the writers were starting to find certain meaning of life within his work, through commoners(sattva)'s point of view. This shares similarity with 「Yeoraechulhyunpum」 for the writer of the varga tries to find the form of buddha within Jungsaengsim.
