한국의 방위산업은 2010년 11.9억 달러의 방산제품(방산물자)을 수출하여 세계무기시장 점유율에서 18위를 기록하였다. 그러나 세계무기시장을 선도하고 있는 북미와 유럽의 방위산업과는 국방기술수준, 생산능력, 매출액, 수출규모 등에서 큰 격차를 보이고 있다. 본 연구에서는 2000~2010년간 세계무기시장에서 나타나고 있는 한국과 시장점유율 상위 5개국(미국, 러시아, 영국, 프랑스, 독일)의 항공기, 대공방어무기체계, 장갑차량, 화력⋅총포, 엔진,유도탄, 센서, 함정 등에 대한 경쟁력을 비교 분석하고, 더 나아가 한국 방산제품의 경쟁력 강화방안을 제시하였다. 한국과 시장점유율 상위 5개국(국가)의 방산제품군별 경쟁력을 도출하기 위해 SIPRI의 세계방위산업 무역데이터베이스 자료를 활용하였고, 이를 통하여 현시비교우위지수(RCA), 현시경쟁우위지수(RC), 무역특화지수(TSI),시장점유율지수(MSI) 등 4가지 무역성과지수를 측정하였다. 글로벌 경쟁력을 분석한 결과, 한국 방위산업에서 경쟁력이 높게 나타난 분야는 화력⋅총포와 함정분야이다. 최근에는 항공기분야가 점차적으로 경쟁력이 개선되는 경향을 보이고 있으며, 중요한 방산 수출품으로 부상하고 있다. 한국 방위산업의 경쟁력을 높이기 위해서는 세계무기시장 분석, 마케팅, R&D, 국제협력생산, 인수합병(M&A) 및 합작회사 설립 등에서 방위산업체와 정부기관과의 긴밀하고 심도 있는 협조체계가 매우 중요하다.
In worldwide conventional arms transfer in 2010, the United States ranked 1st, Russia ranked 2nd, Germany ranked 3rd and Korea(ROK) ranked 18th with $1.19 billion. This study seeks to quantify the extent to which Korea has a export competitiveness of defense products such as Aircraft, Air Defense Systems, Armoured Vehicles, Artillery, Engine, Missile, Sensors, Ships and how this has changed over the period 2000~2010 in the global defense market. To study korea's export competitiveness of defense products, four widely used indexes are calculated such as Market Share Index, Trade Specialization Index, RCA and RC Index. As a result of competitiveness analysis, trade performance indices indicated that Korea's defense industry has a high comparative advantage in Artillery and Ships in the global defense market. In resent years, Aircraft has been gradually emerging as important export defense products. Korea's defense industry is needed a close cooperation with the government organization to enhance export competitiveness of defense products such as analysis of global arms market, global marketing, R&D, international co-production, M&A and joint venture.
